Shopping

Whether you're simply spoiling yourself or trying to track down that perfect present for Auntie Noreen, its always difficult to know where to begin when you're in an unfamiliar city. Here are some ideas to get you started as well as a couple of tips about the best places to pick up good books and newspapers. Krakow is changing all the time and individual stores with real character are opening up week in week out so it shouldn't be a problem to find what you're after (or a nice surprise that you weren't expecting!). Of course if you prefer the shopping mall experience then Galeria Kazimierz and Krakowska are essential ports of call.

There are many small shops within the Old City selling antiques, shoes, there are also restaurants, bars, Internet cafes. You can buy little Cracovian gadgets in Cloth Hall, Main trade building on the market square. Most of those goods are hand - made such as almond and silver jewellery, folk garments, wooden and leather wares. There is a net of EMPIK shops next to St Mary church, where you can buy literature books, guidelines, photo albums and CDs. Huge hypermarkets are situated away from the city centre. One of them offers a vast ranges of CDs (Mediamarkt, M1) such firms as Wawel or Wedel will easily please your chocolate taste whose settlements are at the market square. 'Ptasie Mleczko' and 'pralinki' are particularly delicious, it is just 15 zl for 500 grams of it in different tastes.

For a souvenir you may buy a humorous graphics by Polish caricaturist Andrzej Mleczko. His works are sold in the form of mugs, paintings, and cushions, T-shirts. However his jokes are better understood if you know Polish (shops at st Jana st and in Trade Centre M1). There are also perfumeries at Slawkowska st and St Tomasza st., where you can buy hand - made soap-works. Different kinds of soap are available here weighed according to your wish.
